While the Taj Mahal takes most of the spotlight, there is another marble marvel in Agra that every traveler should see. The Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daula, affectionately known as the "Baby Taj," is often described as a "jewel box in marble."

At Taj Agra Tours, we always encourage our guests to include this stunning site in their itinerary. Here is why the Baby Taj is a must-visit in 2026.

1. The Inspiration for the Taj Mahal

Built between 1622 and 1628 by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, this was the first Mughal structure built entirely out of white marble. It marked the transition from the red sandstone architecture of the Akbar era to the white marble elegance that culminated in the Taj Mahal. Many of the inlay techniques (Pietra Dura) seen at the Taj were actually perfected right here first.

2. Why Travelers Love It

Peace and Quiet: Unlike the Taj Mahal, which sees thousands of visitors, the Baby Taj is peaceful. You can sit in the gardens and admire the intricate carvings without being pushed by crowds.

Intricate Artistry: The delicate marble latticework (jaali) and the colorful stone inlays at Itmad-ud-Daula are, in some ways, even more detailed than those at the Taj Mahal.

Perfect Symmetry: Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, the tomb sits in a beautiful Charbagh (four-quartered) garden, offering incredible symmetry for photographers.

3. Visit Logistics Location: It is located on the eastern bank of the Yamuna River, about 25 minutes from the Taj Mahal.

Entry Fee: Much lower than the Taj Mahal (approx. ₹310 for foreigners and ₹30 for Indians).

Best Time to Visit: Late afternoon. The setting sun hitting the white marble and the river in the background creates a golden glow that is perfect for photos.

4. How to Reach the Baby Taj

The tomb is slightly away from the main tourist hub. The easiest way to visit is by booking a Full Day Agra Sightseeing Tour. We include the Baby Taj as a key stop, ensuring you have a comfortable ride and a guide to explain the fascinating history of the Empress who built it.
