Can You Really See the Taj Mahal in One Day?
Yes, and I send guests on day trips every week. But let's be honest about what it involves. Agra is about 230 km from Delhi, which is 3 to 4 hours each way on the Yamuna Expressway. That leaves around 6 to 7 hours on the ground in Agra, which is enough for the Taj Mahal (plan 2 to 3 hours) and Agra Fort (about an hour). It is not enough to also see Baby Taj, Mehtab Bagh and Fatehpur Sikri without rushing.
Many travel guides say an overnight stay is better, and for most first-timers who have a spare day, I agree. A day trip is the right call if you are staying in Delhi, on a short stopover, or only have one day to give Agra. Neither choice is wrong. It depends on your schedule and how you like to travel.
Your Day Trip Options
1. Taj Mahal day tour by car (the classic)
This is our most booked tour. Here is the timeline:
• 7:00 AM: Pickup from your hotel, airport or any NCR address
• 10:00 AM: Arrive in Agra and visit the Taj Mahal with your guide
• 1:00 PM: Buffet lunch at a 5-star hotel
• 2:00 PM: Agra Fort
• 3:00 PM: Marble inlay workshop, where artisans show the same craft used on the Taj
• 4:00 PM: Drive back to Delhi, arriving around 7:00 PM
Per person, the price is $150 for one traveler, $100 each for two, $90 each for three, $80 each for four and $75 each for five. Children are $70. Our Taj Mahal tour from Delhi by car includes the entrance tickets, skip-the-line assistance, lunch, bottled water, tolls and parking.
2. Sunrise Taj Mahal day tour (one day, with sunrise)
This is for travelers who refuse to miss the sunrise but only have one day. The catch: your driver picks you up around 3:00 AM (usually between 2:30 and 3:30, depending on the season), you reach the Taj Mahal around 6:00 AM, and you have breakfast at a 5-star hotel afterward. Then comes Agra Fort and a quick artisan visit, and you are back in Delhi around 3:00 PM. You get the best light and thinner crowds, and you are free for the afternoon. The price is the same as the car day tour. See our Sunrise Taj Mahal tour from Delhi.
3. Taj Mahal tour by train (Gatimaan Express)
If you would rather skip the road, the Gatimaan Express leaves Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin station at 8:10 AM and reaches Agra at 9:50 AM. The return train leaves Agra at 5:50 PM and gets you back at 7:30 PM. Your guide meets you at the platform. The train does not run on Fridays, and neither does the Taj, so plan around that. Prices are $160 solo, $120 each for two, $115 each for three, $100 each for four and $90 each for five or more. Our Taj Mahal tour from Delhi by train includes the round-trip tickets and train meals.
4. Luxury Taj Mahal day tour
For couples, anniversaries, seniors, or anyone who wants the day to feel effortless. You travel in a BMW, Mercedes or Audi, with a professional chauffeur, a private guide and a 5-star buffet lunch at DoubleTree by Hilton or Courtyard by Marriott. The price is $280 per person for two travelers, or $500 for a solo traveler. Check out the Luxury Taj Mahal tour from Delhi.
Your 2-Day Options
2 days Agra tour from Delhi
This is the one I recommend most to first-time visitors with a spare day.
• Day 1: Leave Delhi in the morning (around 10 AM works well), drive to Agra, visit Baby Taj (Itimad-ud-Daulah), then watch the sunset view of the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh across the river. Check in to your hotel and relax.
• Day 2: Visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise, return for breakfast, check out, visit Agra Fort and a marble inlay workshop, then drive back to Delhi (3 to 4 hours).
You can see more details on our 2 days Agra tour from Delhi page.
2 days Delhi Agra tour
This one adds Delhi on Day 1: India Gate, Parliament House, Jama Masjid, a cycle rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk, Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar, then the drive to Agra.
Day 2 is the same sunrise Taj, Agra Fort, Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh. It suits travelers who want Delhi and Agra in just two days. See the 2 days Delhi Agra tour.
2-day prices and hotels in Agra (per couple)
Hotel level | Hotels | Price per couple |
3-star (budget friendly) | Taj Vilas, Atulyaa Taj | $299 |
4-star (best value) | Royale Sarovar Portico, Howard Plaza The Fern | $399 |
5-star (premium comfort) | Courtyard by Marriott, DoubleTree by Hilton | $499 |
Luxury 5-star | The Oberoi Amarvilas, ITC Mughal | $1,299 |
Prices assume two travelers sharing a room and include private transport, a licensed guide, monument tickets, one night's hotel and breakfast. The luxury level is a different experience, not just a bigger room: The Oberoi Amarvilas is known for rooms that look toward the Taj Mahal, and ITC Mughal is a sprawling Mughal-inspired resort with palace-style grounds. If you want to splurge on one night in India, Agra is a good place to do it.

Day Trip vs 2 Days: Head to Head
Factor | Day trip | 2 days (1 night) |
Time in Agra | About 6-7 hours | About 24 hours |
Taj Mahal light | Midday (or sunrise with a 3 AM start) | Sunrise and a sunset view from Mehtab Bagh |
Sights covered | Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, one craft stop | Adds Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh, at an easy pace |
Pace | Long day, 7 to 8 hours in the car | Spread out, much less tiring |
Hotel | None | 3-star to luxury, your choice |
Cost (2 travelers) | About $150-$280 total (car or train) | From $299 total |
Best for | Short stopovers, tight schedules | First-timers, couples, families, photographers |
Here is how I think about it. The extra cost of the 2-day tour is mostly one hotel night, and in return you get a calmer trip and a much better experience of the Taj. If you are flying in from the US, UK or Australia and dealing with jet lag, an overnight stay is also far kinder than a 3 AM start.
What It Really Costs (and What's Extra)
• Monument tickets are included in our packages. For reference, a foreign visitor's Taj Mahal ticket is currently about ₹1,300 (roughly $16), including the main mausoleum, so make sure you are not paying for it twice.
• Extras: tips for your guide and driver (optional), drinks and personal expenses. On the 2-day tours, lunches and dinners are also extra, since breakfast is the included meal.
• Payment: a 20% deposit confirms your booking, and the balance is due on arrival in Agra. We take credit cards and PayPal.
• Cancellation: free cancellation up to 48 hours before your tour.
• Prices change by season and group size, so ask for an exact quote for your date.
Timings to Know Before You Book
• The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday. Do not plan your Taj visit on a Friday. Agra Fort, Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh stay open, so a Friday evening in Agra still works, and then you do the Taj at sunrise on Saturday. This is a clever way to plan a 2-day trip.
• Opening hours follow the sun. The Taj opens about 30 minutes before sunrise and closes about 30 minutes before sunset, which means roughly 5 AM in summer and 6:30 AM in December.
• Plan 2 to 3 hours inside the Taj Mahal. Visits are limited to around 3 hours.
• Best time to visit: October to March, when the weather is cool and clear. April to June is hot, and July to September is monsoon season.
• Drive time: 3 to 4 hours each way. The Gatimaan Express takes about 100 minutes.
What to See in Agra
Place | Time needed | Why go |
Taj Mahal | 2-3 hours | The 17th-century white marble masterpiece and UNESCO site |
Agra Fort | About 1-1.5 hours | The red sandstone fortress where Mughal emperors lived |
Baby Taj (Itimad-ud-Daulah) | About 45 minutes | Delicate marble inlay, a preview of the Taj's design |
Mehtab Bagh | About 45 minutes | A garden with a quiet, classic view of the Taj across the river |
Fatehpur Sikri | About 2 hours | Emperor Akbar's abandoned capital, usually on the way to Jaipur |
A day trip covers the first two comfortably. A 2-day trip adds Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh. Fatehpur Sikri fits best into a longer Golden Triangle trip.
Which One Should You Choose?
• First time in India, with one spare day: 2 days. You will be glad you stayed.
• Honeymoon or anniversary: 2 days with a 5-star or luxury hotel for a sunrise you will remember.
• Family with kids or seniors: 2 days, or the luxury day tour if you only have one day. Shorter days in the car make a big difference.
• Solo traveler or friends on a short trip: a day trip by car or train.
• Photographers: 2 days, so you get sunrise and sunset light.
• Staying in Delhi and short on days: the car day tour, or the train if you prefer to skip the road.
If you want a bigger trip, you can also add Jaipur and more with our Golden Triangle tours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I visit the Taj Mahal from Delhi in one day?
Yes. Start early, spend about 3 hours at the Taj Mahal, then see Agra Fort and head back. Expect a 12 to 14 hour day.
Is one day enough for Agra?
One day is enough for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. If you also want Baby Taj, Mehtab Bagh and a sunrise visit, stay overnight.
How do I get from Delhi to Agra?
By private car on the Yamuna Expressway (3 to 4 hours) or by the Gatimaan Express train (about 100 minutes). The train does not run on Fridays.
What is the best time to see the Taj Mahal?
Sunrise, for soft light and fewer crowds. October to March is the best season.
Is the Taj Mahal open on Fridays?
No. It is closed every Friday.
Are entrance tickets included?
Yes, in our standard packages. We also offer tour-only options if you prefer to buy tickets yourself.
Is it safe for American and other Western tourists?
Yes, especially on a private tour. You travel with your own vehicle, driver and licensed guide, so there are no touts to deal with and no transport to figure out.
What should I bring?
Your passport or a copy, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a camera. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. Bottled water is provided on our tours.
Final Word From Me
If you only remember one thing from this guide, make it this: the day trip is a great way to see the Taj Mahal, but one night in Agra turns a good visit into a memorable one. Pick the option that fits your schedule, avoid Fridays, and go as early as you can. Whichever you choose, a licensed local guide and a private car take away all the stress.
